CONSERVATION
PROJECT FOR THE GIANT ANTEATER (Myrmecophaga trudactyla)

Zoológico de Florencio Varela, Argentina
ARTIS Zoo, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

.....

In the Argentine Zoo El Zoológico de Florencio Varela (Buenos Aires) a cooperative project with ARTIS Zoo (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) has started on the conservation of the Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla).

The project has received approval from both local fauna authorities, and the Zoo Associations of Buenos Aires (AZBA), Argentina (AZARA) and Latin America (ALPZA). The project is recognized by the European Endangered Species Program (EEP) of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).

The project entails development of a captive breeding program – a first birth took place on May 13 of this year, rehabilitation of animals rescued from the wild, and the establishment of an education center for the conservation of the Giant Anteater. Field research is part of the next phase.
